Harvesting of Paddy at Wasan

On 17th August 2009 (Monday), BEAPCA set another trip which was located at Ladang Padi Wasan Mukim Panggalan Batu. The bus left UBD at around six o’clock in the morning and I was late at that time so I had to go to the location directly by myself. Once reach the destination, I was a little upset with the weather outside as it was very hot causing myself to be a little less motivated on doing this whole trip session. As soon as the arrival at the location, all of us had to gathered at the camp to get ready with our equipment which includes our gloves, boots, hats, etc.

I learned how to collect the paddy through the brief explanation given to us. After doing couple of times on paddy gathering, I got pretty excited since it was my first time experience. During that time, I spotted a few insects and one of them catches my eyes. It was a grasshopper – like insects (I am not sure what that was). The harvesting was fine and not until my boots got stuck at the muddy part of the paddy field. It was hard for me to get my boots out from there but fortunately, Zyma was there to help me.

After finished harvesting for about an hour, all of us gathered at the camp, harvested paddy were placed into big bags and was given back to the owner. At first, it was fine not until my face felt painful. Soon, I realized that I got sunburn. I was really exhausted not to mention of all the hard work and also the hot sunny weather. Anyhow, we were all very pleased to know that the foods were served for us.
After a few minutes chatting with the owner (Hj Mohd Ali Bin Bakar including his assistant) some BEAPCA members left. Some students, including myself stayed longer to question and picture. From the owner, I learned history, the processes of paddy planting, equipment use and so on. Before we went off at exact 10am, we received a packet of Laila paddy each.

I considered this trip was moderately successful. We experienced the toughness of producing paddy that taught us to appreciate paddy. However, some members came late. I would like to suggest the BEAPCA members to ask more questions for self advantages.
