Week 10, 18th October 2009 – BEAPCA’s students and 2 lecturers went to Sungai Akar for a tougher course’s trip, ‘Diplomatic Resident’. Due to transport and punctuality issues, we initiated our activity a few minutes late. This illustrated that there was no time management.
I volunteered to be the week’s First Aider. It was much easier than being a leader or a track organizer. My job was to carry the first aid kit and to execute when necessary. Nazz and Dr Irene prepared some simple first aid for me to carry and I bought bandage and plasters. I assisted my group to clean the area and assembled tins for recycle as well.
If I were to compare with the previous hiking activities, these hills were steeper and higher, trees were taller and further in distance. From my observation, there were only few different plants from the previous forests I went such as a gigantic pandan plant. Furthermore, I could not see any animals other than insects for instances bugs, ants and termites. I spotted a bizarre nest on a tree’s trunk. It was said that it was a termites’ nest.
In the jungle, I accidently hit my forehead to a tree’s trunk because I was too concentrating on balancing my body. I was feeling unwell. From this, I tried to focus both surrounding and my steeps. A group was lost before Dr Irene and a student found them. This incident worried all of the students.
As a First Aider, it gave me great pleasure to report that there was no serious injury. Siti Nazihah Binti Nooradin went dizzy perhaps due to dehydration. From this, I assumed that she did not drink enough water. I learned we should not ignore those who are not feeling well and we must not look down when we feel wobbly.
From my point of view, this trip was slightly unsuccessful; transports issue, less concentration (leaders went to the wrong direction and a group lost in the jungle) and no punctuality (some members did not come on time). Therefore, I would like to recommend to all participations to be more punctual and focus on any future activity. Furthermore, to the transport organizer, he/she should prepare transport earlier (perhaps ask the bus driver to be on time).
