14th September 2009 (Monday), BEAPCA’s students experienced a community action in University of Brunei Darussalam. Our aim was to reduce greenhouse gases through Electricity use in University of Brunei Darussalam.
Siti Nazihah Binti Nooradin and I, as a partner of "concerned" students went to the building of Faculty of Science in University of Brunei Darussalam to survey the incidents which cause green house effect. I record the results of my survey in a tabular form (please refer to the bottom of this report) and my reflections of this experience.
We found out numbers of wasted facilities used. Some offices and laboratories that were not used by people were left with the air conditionings still switch on and windows were opened. Unfortunately, we did not turn it off because we did not know where the switch is.
Additionally, the lights along the corridors were left on although it was daytime as it’s not suppose to be in use. Lights in the laboratories and toilets were also the same. We took some pictures as evidences for our surveys and we switched all the lights off right after that.
Other than that, we found that some of the sockets at the Biology Department’s corridor were left on while that was not any plug attach to it or in use. This was discovered by my partner.
There are small notices on the walls saying that all switches must be turn off before leaving the rooms. But yet, people still ignore it. Perhaps, the notices are hardly noticeable.
I suggest people to make bigger notices and all lecturers are to make sure that the students switch off the electricity before leaving any rooms, laboratories and etc. Otherwise, set a time for every electricity use. Examples, Lights along the corridors will automatic switch off from 6am to 4pm.
