15th November 2009, Sunday – BEAPCA members went to Ulu Temburong for the last educational excursion for this semester. Basically, we went to Temburong district for Canopy walk, waterfall and the Iban’s longhouse. I have to admit that we were late when we were supposed to leave UBD at 6am and arrive at Kianggeh by 6.30am sharp. The visits lasted for about 10 hours.
I collected BND$12 collections per participant and keeping records of the receipts, expenses, and attendance for that day. As a treasurer, I would like to enlighten that there were 18 participants (included 2 lecturers), the opening balance for this activity was BND$20, total receipt I received was BND$192, total expenditure paid was BND$212 and closing balance was BND$0.00. In additions, the fees were sponsored by UBD.
Temburong was differed from Brunei Muara. There was a big difference Bangar and Bandar Seri Begawan. It was mostly covered with rainforest in Temburong district. Moreover, there were no restaurants such as 'KFC', 'Ayamku' and 'Pizza Hut'. Most Temburong people owned their motorcycles. There was not much entertainment such as cinema, mall shopping centre and swimming pool (I supposed). In additions, coloured stones were placed along the road for road decoration. Brunei Muara district have better facilities, more shopping shops and etc.
Along the Temburong River, there were rapids, pebbles and waterfall. I saw ‘Bitterns’ bird and different kind of trees. It was wonderful to see, to hear and to smell the breeze of nature. I realized that the river were very essential to the Temburong people. They used it for fishing, washing and as a way for boating.
At the ‘Canopy walkway’, it showed that all of us (I believed) have confidents and trusts. We walked through the canopy walkway’s bridge. This bridge was attained to Canopy trees. It was frightening but fantastic standing on the top of the ‘Canopy Walkway’.
During the visit to the Iban’s longhouse, I learned some Iban culture. I assumed that most Ibans live in longhouse. From my observation, the Ibans were creative to reuse scraped materials (for instances, easy cards and used paper) to decorate their houses. They also use ‘rotan’ to make ‘tikar’, ‘basket’ and etc to earn money.
I credence, this BEAPCA course trained us to better reports writing. We are asked to write a report for every activity which occasionally learned new vocabularies and grammar mistakes. Moreover, we are given the opportunity to socialize. I used my Japanese language that I learned in UBD to communicate with the Japanese people I met at the ‘Canopy walkway’. In additional, this trip gave us the opportunity to try ‘Durian Tayie’ also known as ‘Durian Hutan’.
We are trained to be leaders, to work together as well as to appreciate the environment. These proved that this course qualified us to better communication skills and improve our behavior in addition to enlarge our knowledge.
I personally thought that it would be better if the boat driver use better engine (produce less sound) so that it would not scared away the animals as they are sensitive to loud sound. We all equipped ourselves with life jackets perhaps due to the unexpected incidence from the previous activity. I think this event trip was successful and everyone showed great enthusiasm.
